Reefer Rail Freight
Temperature-controlled intermodal rail shipping utilizing mobile diesel generators and continuous thermal tracking.
Refrigerated (Reefer) Rail Intermodal Solutions
Reefer rail transport is crucial for maintaining cold chain integrity over long distances. Fresh agricultural produce, frozen meat, dairy, pharmaceuticals, and sensitive chemicals require precise temperature-controlled environments from loading dock to port gates.
Scan2Freight manages reefer cargo by loading temperature-controlled container boxes onto rail flatcars, utilizing active diesel generator units (Gen-Sets) to maintain power throughout the journey.
How Reefer Containers Maintain Power on Trains
Unlike cargo ships or port terminals, railway lines do not provide electrical hookups for containers. To maintain power during rail transit:
- Clip-On Generator Sets (Gen-Sets): Mobile diesel generator sets are attached directly to the container frame, supplying continuous 460V power to the refrigeration units.
- Under-Slung Gen-Sets: Mounted on the rail wagon chassis below the container, providing an alternative power source.
- Fuel Management: Our transit teams check diesel fuel levels at key railway hubs to prevent power interruptions during long-distance routes.
Continuous Temperature & Humidity Tracking
To ensure cargo quality, reefer shipments are equipped with real-time sensor telematics:
- Thermal Logging: Sensors record temperatures at regular intervals, generating a temperature log for the receiver.
- GPS Tracking: Sends real-time alerts if temperature levels deviate from target settings (+/- 0.5°C).
- Humidity and Vent Controls: Adjusts fresh air ventilation and dehumidification systems to prevent condensation and spoilage.
