Containers are secured and handled at rail terminals using specialized mechanics:

Automatic Twist-Locks (ATL): Built-in steel locks on flatcar platforms engage container corner castings, locking them down automatically as the container is lowered.
Reach Stackers & RTGs: Rail terminals utilize heavy reach stacker cranes and Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes to load and unload containers from train platforms.

Are there size restrictions for intermodal rail containers?

Standard 20ft and 40ft ISO dry containers, open tops, and high cubes are fully supported. Special out-of-gauge (OOG) container shipments require clearance approvals from railway engineers.
