Erenhot & Zamyn-Uud

Technical rail gauge transitions and joint customs operations at the China-Mongolia border.

The China-Mongolia Border Crossing

The Erenhot (China) and Zamyn-Uud (Mongolia) border junction is the main railway link on the Trans-Mongolian line. All cargo container trains traveling to Ulaanbaatar pass through this key gateway.

Because the two countries use different rail gauge systems, specialized transfer and customs documentation are required to keep cargo moving without delay.

Rail Gauge Transitions & Crane Operations

Overcoming rail track differences is a key part of the logistics process:

  • Track Differences: Chinese rail lines use standard-gauge tracks (1,435 mm), while Mongolian rail lines use broad-gauge tracks (1,520 mm).
  • Container Transfers: Containers are lifted by heavy gantry cranes from Chinese rail cars and loaded onto broad-gauge Mongolian wagons at Erenhot/Zamyn-Uud terminal yards.

Border FAQ

Why do China and Mongolia use different rail gauges?
China built its network using the international standard gauge (1435mm), whereas Mongolia adopted the broad gauge (1520mm) system, which is standard across Russia and CIS countries.
How long does gauge changing take?
The physical transfer of containers from one train to another takes a few hours, but scheduling and customs documentation audits can add 1 to 3 days of processing time at the border.
